Grider was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye condition, at the age of 12. By the time he was 30, he had lost most of his sight. About the Author

Grider has also written for a variety of publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Christian Science Monitor. He has appeared on numerous television and radio programs, including The Today Show, Good Morning America, and NPR's All Things Considered.

Grider is a recipient of the Helen Keller Award for Personal Achievement and the American Foundation for the Blind's Migel Medal. He is a member of the National Press Club and the Society of Professional Journalists.
